Conrad Sheldon's The Big Con (First Draft, Summer 2003)

Welcome to Hicksville, Ohio. One of the trashiest towns in America and the world.

The Story:

8:00 P.M.

The first thing you see is an on air sign that lights up. Then a view of the studio with a camera lowering to get a better view of the news people. Conrad Sheldon arrives on stage to give a public speech since he had won the privilege to give a speech on TV. He wrote the speech himself. Finally the cameras are rolling. Conrad begins to give his speech. Meanwhile in another part of the city in an abandoned warehouse a group of crooks are watching the broadcast. The man in charge is captivated by this person on TV and orders his group to have him kidnapped. The other two guys leave the room. We continue to see the broadcast back from the studio. Finally it ends and Conrad gets up and leaves the stage. Conrad looks for the exit and finds himself in the back alley. Quite suddenly two guys run up and toss him into a bag. They load him into their van and take off. The title screen appears with the van driving down the road, street lights passing by, the street moving, and cityscape in the background zooming by. Also, maybe the tires have some effect of movement as well. The title "The Big Con" appears and the opening credits appear. Finally after all this is done the next scene appears. The van docks into the abandoned warehouse and Conrad is unloaded. Conrad is brought to the man in charge and a few words are exchanged. Conrad tells the man in his usual style of language that somebody will find out he's missing and come looking for him. The man says that wont be a problem since he has been replaced with a look alike. Throughout the game there will be scenes that cut back to this look alike trying to live with Conrad's unusual family. The man seems hasty to give away his full plan. He looks Conrad over once more and then tells the other men to load Conrad back into the van. The men go off into another room briefly to further discuss their plan. Meanwhile Conrad sits tied up in the back of the van trying to think of a way out. Soon later the two men return to the van and start the engine. The van pulls out from the warehouse and takes off. The man in charge walks out and says a few words. He says that things are going just as he has planned. He mutters some stuff under his breathe. To which only he can hear. Then he makes a sinister laugh. Meanwhile the van arrives at it's destination across town. An old science lab. Now what could the crooks want from that place. They park in front of the building near the entrance. The two crooks get out of the van and prepare to unload Conrad. They pull him out and drag him into the lab. They enter a lab station on the second floor and set Conrad on a table. What in the world could this be all about Conrad thinks to himself. One of the crooks prepares a needle. Conrad faints from the shock of seeing a needle. The crook inserts the needle into one of Conrad's arms and removes a blood sample. Conrad awakes and jumps up. He knocks one of the crooks over onto the ground as a reflex action. The downed crook yells out to the other crook to stop Conrad. Conrad trips down the stairs into the lobby and runs for an exit. He manages to make it out a back door. The door slams shut behind him. Conrad has found himself in another alley.

9:00 P.M.

Conrad has found himself in another alley. He notices a gate to his left. It appears to be locked. Conrad looks to his right and notices an old dumpster full of garbage. After digging his way to the bottom of it he finds a key. Conrad uses the key to unlock the gate. Conrad is now in the front of the building again. He notices that the van is gone. Maybe they gave up chasing after him. Conrad breathes a sigh of relief. Just then a pair of headlights flash onto Conrad. Conrad runs for his life as the van chases after him. He runs across the street and into another alley. At the end of the alley he finds a fence blocking his path. The van momentarily stops and revs it's engines. It then comes roaring after Conrad at blazing speeds. Is this the end for our dear friend? Suddenly Conrad notices a fire escape ladder just above him. Conrad jumps for it and climbs up. The van crashes through the fence. Conrad climbs back down and walks through the broken fence. He briefly makes eye contact with the two crooks. He then runs off into the night. The two crooks having lost their chance to recapture Conrad must now head back to their leader empty handed. Aside from the blood sample that is. They can only hope they don't lose their jobs for letting Conrad go free. Meanwhile back at the warehouse the leader awaits the return of his henchmen. They soon arrive. The leader notices that the van looks pretty badly beat up. If only he knew what had transpired. The two crooks play it cool and act as though they killed Conrad. The leader seems only concerned with the blood sample they have brought him. They all walk back into the warehouse. The big factory door closes behind them. What evil plan could they possibly have in store?

10:00 P.M.

Meanwhile we find Conrad resting from a long run. He is glad to have finally escaped those nasty crooks once and for all or so he thinks. He appears to be outside a liquor store in downtown Hicksville. There is an alley beside the liquor store but it doesn't look safe to travel down yet. He finds three dangerous looking guys hanging outside the store. They are all carrying sharp looking knives. He better not mess with these guys or he may lose a few appendages. Conrad enters the liquor store. Although he has never had a drink before in his life. Conrad picks up a bag of chips and a soda. As he walks up to the cashier he realizes he doesn't have any money. Suddenly the three dangerous looking guys enter the liquor store. Uh, oh. They approach the young lady working at the cash register. They ask her to dump all the money into a bag. The young lady looks fairly scared. Conrad has to do something but he doesn't want to lose his life in the process. Conrad remembers his childhood playing with dominoes. He steps back and knocks a shelf over which crashes into another shelf which then crashes into yet another shelf and finally crashes down onto the three dangerous criminals. The young lady is relieved to see the three dangerous criminals knocked out. She deeply thanks Conrad. She offers him anything he wants in the store at no charge. Conrad briefly thinks about taking everything in the store but then simply asks for the chips and soda. Conrad leaves the liquor store feeling proud of what he just accomplished. Having taken the criminals out of commission he can now safely walk down the alley that is beside the liquor store. Conrad walks down the alley and comes to another street. He looks both ways and then crosses. Conrad takes a look around. He's in the parking lot of a Big 5-0 sporting goods store. Conrad is now getting mighty hungry. He decides to open the bag of chips. Within moments he digests the entire thing. Conrad tosses away the empty chip bag since he no longer has any use for it. It seems as though littering is not a crime in Hicksville. Conrad notices a cart full of junk. He decides to rummage through it. In it he finds a single needle. A needle in a junk stack! Conrad manages to poke himself with the needle several times as he puts it in his pocket. Conrad walks toward the store entrance. When he gets to the door he realizes the store is closed. He reads the office hours chart. It clearly says 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. It looks like the store just closed moments ago. It doesn't matter though since Conrad doesn't have any money to spend. Conrad begins to walk toward the side of the building. Conrad turns the corner. On the side of the building sits a bum. He begs for food as Conrad passes him. Conrad approaches the back side slowly. Conrad walks forward a bit. Before going any further he decides to set down the needle on the ground. The sharp pin is sticking straight up. Hmm, what kind of plan does Conrad have in mind? Conrad walks a few steps further. Suddenly a man jumps out from behind some empty crates. This man looks very dangerous to Conrad. The man pulls out a sharp knife from his pocket. He then formally introduces himself. His name is Smart Guy! Conrad steps back a bit in terror. Smart Guy has a big smirk on his face. He follows Conrad slowly. Conrad begs for mercy from Smart Guy. Smart Guy just laughs at Conrad and explains how he's been hating him since the speech he gave on the news two hours ago. Now he can finally have Conrad's head. Conrad is about to lose more than just his late night snack. Conrad looks down and sees the needle he had placed on the ground a few moments earlier. Conrad is glad that he did that because he now has a brilliant plan. For Conrad this is genius since he normally can't even tie his shoe laces. Smart Guy begins to lunge at Conrad with the knife. Then suddenly Smart Guy steps on the needle. Smart Guy drops the knife which then stabs through his other foot. His smirk turns into a frown and his eyes turn red. Conrad now has his chance to escape. He runs past Smart Guy. Unfortunately Conrad trips over an empty crate. He is knocked unconscious in the process. Smart Guy pulls himself from the ground and approaches Conrad with the needle and knife still lodged in his feet. He decides not to kill Conrad just yet. Instead he ties him up with an old rope from his pocket and drags him away. Maybe he's planning to torture him first. Meanwhile in another part of town a man named Cornfed arrives at the doorstep of the Sheldon home. This man is in fact posing as Conrad. Conrad's mother opens the door and welcomes Cornfed into the house. She briefly stops to ask Cornfed how the show taping went. Cornfed acknowledges that it went very well. The mother then walks into the other room allowing Cornfed to roam the house freely. Cornfed walks into the living room and plants a bug under a table. He then contacts his boss through a concealed device within his clothing. Cornfed informs his boss that he has successfully infiltrated the Sheldon home. He then informs his boss that the bug is in place. Cornfed hears foot steps coming his way. He decides to end the conversation with his boss. On the other end of the line we see the leader of the crooks hanging up the phone inside the warehouse. He explains to his henchmen that all is going as planned. He briefly holds up the blood sample in his hand. They then leave the room.

Some Generic Ideas For Later In The Game:

At some point in the game Conrad realizes there is another Conrad Sheldon. Not the imitator back in his home town though. This Conrad believes that Conrad Sheldon's recent fame should be credited to him and when he doesn't get the credit he comes after Conrad. In the end it turns out that it wasn't even another Conrad but in fact one of the two guys in the Conrad costume (Inside Joke).

At some point in the game Conrad arrives in a town were Conrad clones are trained. He finally realizes the grand plot of the crooks.

At some point in game Conrad gets free of his obligation to the crooks (he gets recaptured a little later in the game) but the crooks have Conrad framed. Now he must run from the police and try to prove his innocence.

At the end of the game Conrad meets up with the president of the USA for being a hero to his country and stopping the crooks from unleashing their master plan. He has an interestingly slurred conversation with the president. Eventually Conrad is led out to a podium to give a speech. The president speaks first and then moves to Conrad's side. Conrad speaks about his adventure. The quest he went on to free himself of the villains. At the end of the speech he reveals a startling revelation. He is not really Conrad Sheldon. He is in fact MeelWORM and Mike Haley. The crowd gasps. He pulls off his mask to reveal MeelWORM and Mike inside. The president taps Conrad...err MeelWORM and Mike on the back and laughs. MeelWORM and Mike look at the crowd and smile. Meanwhile back at the Sheldon home Cornfed is hiding on the roof away from the family. The father is throwing stuff up at him to try and get him to come down while the mother is tapping a broom onto the ceiling from below. Cornfed yells out for help: "Someone please help me! Take me away from his crazy family!". The credits roll.

At some point in the game Conrad gets knocked out and thinks he's awake again a few moments later but is really still asleep and continues his adventure from there in his dream. Leading up to the amazing ending. In reality the crooks are captured. In the dream they are captured too but Conrad is made out to be the big hero and goes to Washington D.C to meet the president. In reality Conrad is rushed to the hospital in a coma and later released into the care of his family. He wakes up in his own bed at the start of the sequel (The Big Family Reunion). This will not be revealed until the sequel though.

After Conrad steps over the hill to see the facility full of clones he comes across a security guard that has a walkie talkie. Behind him is the entrance to the facility. Conrad must find another walkie talkie which a higher ranking officer has. Who is currently taking a nap. If Conrad can get the walkie talkie he can call the security guard and tell him to take a break. Conrad can then open the gate and enter the facility.

Conrad gets knocked out really late in the game. He awakes sometime later. He awakes in his bed at home. After a complete inspection of the house he finds something out of place. A single picture on the wall is crooked. Conrad straightens it out. The walls come crashing down. The house was a set. The crooks emerge and welcome Conrad back to the warehouse. Conrad remembers the tracking device the police gave him which is still in his pocket. He activates it. The police soon arrive and arrest the crooks.

Conrad could be able to go back to earlier areas in the game. He will definitely be able to explore all the areas he's currently in as many times as he wants, but he could be able to explore earlier areas that took place before cut scenes. Another interesting idea regarding this could be to have easter eggs hidden in these in-between areas that would connect the two areas. For instance in-between the dead end alley where the van crashed, and the liquor store there could be a shop that Conrad could visit and buy something he normally would not have. How about "Martin's Kool Aid". Conrad could get a free kool aid from Martin. The only downside to this is that if we incorporate the ability to always be able to go back, what happens when the sun begins to rise in the last hours of the game. If you go back those earlier areas will still appear to be night time.

It is later revealed that Smart Guy was hired by the crooks to kill Conrad. What the crooks don't know is that Smart Guy is a double agent. This is why Smart Guy did not report his encounter with Conrad behind Big 5-0 to the crooks. Although, he still wants to kill Conrad. He just doesn't like him for some reason.

From the start of the game Conrad will have a strange item in his inventory. One which has no use at all throughout the game. This is just there to confuse people.

The key from the lab alley gets used again sometime later.

At the end of the game Conrad loses his marbles.
